Sticker culture is vibrant, beautiful and — on the whole — hella based. I love how the hidden nooks of a city become the canvas for so many artists, fans, and wannabe rappers. I love how you have to know where to look and how spotting your favourites feels like treasure.
But the same dynamics that allow a single guy to become a local icon by plastering his portrait on every surface also enable a small group of people to spread their shit all over the city. Recently, I've seen quite a few of these TERFy stickers pop up around my neighbourhood.
Terfmap is an effort to systematically map and remove these stickers to assert our values on the never-ending canvas of our cities. Wanna help? It's fun, I promise.
TERF is short for Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist. It describes a reactionary movement of self-proclaimed feminists that fight against the inclusion and acceptance of transgender people, including both men and women. Most TERFs reject the TERF label and instead refer to themselves as "gender critical". Their ideology typically lacks a factual basis and is rejected by both the wider LGBTQ+ community and the scientific consensus. Many TERFs hold similar reactionary views against sex workers of all kinds. They are sometimes referred to as SWERFs in this context. TL;DR: We don't like them very much. You can read some more on TERFS and SWERFs over on the daily dot, if you like.Hold on, what's a TERF?
You sure these are all TERF stickers?
Any sticker removal tips?
Will people look at me weird if I spend a minute peeling stickers off a lantern?
Can I get some stickers?
I would like to throw money at you.
I really need to talk to you.Questions & Answers
Yes, although some of them are decently subtle dogwhistles. Don't worry, I checked.
Most of the stickers peel off easily once you get a corner off with your fingernails. Stickers on flat, clean metal surfaces can be stubborn, but a thin plastic or metal scraping tool (think credit card etc) will help. If all else fails, you can always stick something else on top.
In my experience, absolutely not. Your mileage may vary.
Sure! Just get in touch, we'll figure something out.
ok thanks 💞
